President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday
promised that his administration would not be distracted from
prosecuting its developmental programmes despite the intrigues
heralding the 2015 general elections.
He also vowed to work with the
Independent National Electoral Commission and other key stakeholders to
make proper preparations for the elections based on his belief that
credible elections are bedrock of democracy.
Jonathan made the pledge in his
Eid-el-Maulud message to the nation made available by his Special
Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, in Abuja.
The statement partly reads, “Against the
background of the increasing tempo of political activities in the
country, as individuals, groups and parties jostle for vantage positions
in the countdown to next year’s general elections, President Jonathan
assures all Nigerians that his administration will not be distracted
from working diligently to bring all of its priority developmental
programmes and projects to a successful conclusion.
“The President also assures the nation
that his administration will continue to act on its belief that only
free, fair and credible elections can make democracy in Nigeria truly
meaningful and useful as a vehicle for development and progress.
“The President believes that a greater
internalisation of the virtues of honesty, selflessness, charity,
tolerance, good neighbourliness, justice, equity and fairness which the
Prophet preached and exemplified will be of immense benefit to the
nation in this regard.”
Also, Senate President David Mark in his
message implored Nigerians to put aside ethnic, political and
religious differences and collaborate with each other to build a united
and peaceful nation where everybody would feel free and safe.
Mark gave the advice on Monday in his
Eid-el-Maulud message to Nigerians signed by his Special Adviser on
Media and Publicity, Mr. Kola Ologbodiyan.
Mark said, “The celebration of the birth
of Prophet Mohammed should renew our faith and bond of unity as one
people, one nation, our diversities not withstanding.”
Also, the Speaker of the House of
Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has enjoined Nigerians to imbibe the
teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and strive to live with one another
in peace and harmony.
In a message issued by his Special
Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mallam Imam, Tambuwal said just
like the birth of the Prophet in Mecca ushered in a new dawn for
humanity, Nigerians should view the occasion of this year’s Maulud
Nabiyyi as an opportunity for a new beginning for the country.
He said, “I believe that we will make
progress towards the realisation of our shared vision of a strong,
united and prosperous nation if our people imbibe the prophet’s lessons
of peace, tolerance, honesty, selflessness, sincerity, justice, equity
and peaceful co-existence with others, including fairness to all”.
Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah
Ahmed and the Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Mr Razak Atunwa
urged muslims across the country to imbibe the virtues of forgiveness,
love, piety, humility, transparency, tolerance and perseverance.
Also, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau
State has urged Muslims to uphold the tenets of peaceful coexistence and
respect for all faith as professed by Prophet Mohammed.
