ROMA 3-2 BAYERN MUNICH:
FRANCESCO TOTTI PENALTY
WINNER SEALS MAGNIFICENT
GIALLOROSSI FIGHTBACK
Nov 23, 2010 9:34:00 PM
The skipper came off the bench to
fire the winner after Marco Borriello
and Daniele De Rossi had cancelled
out Mario Gomez's brace.
Roma performed a magnificent
comeback to record a 3-2 victory
over Bayern Munich at the Olimpico
to virtually book their place in the
last 16 of the Champions League.
After Mario Gomez's first half brace,
Marco Borriello struck a sensational
effort off the floor before goals in
the last 10 minutes from Daniele De
Rossi and Francesco Totti from the
penalty spot sealed a sensational
win.
Within two minutes Roma caused
some concern at the back for
Bayern when Borriello turned well
from a throw-in and immediately
sent in a shot which Thomas Kraft
could only punch back into danger.
When Borriello couldn ’t pounce,
Jeremy Menez tried a clever chip,
but could only send the ball over
the bar.
As Roma looked to gain an early
stranglehold, the visitors were
forced to search for chances on the
break, and from one such move
Danijel Pranjic crossed superbly
from the left of the byline for Toni
Kroos, but the youngster couldn’t
deal with the difficult bounce and
could only deflect the ball over the
bar.
Bayern continued to press forward
for a fair period thereafter, finally
showing the form which had seen
them record four wins from four so
far in Group E. A number of free-
kicks were squandered though, and
Menez remained a worry for the
Bavarians. When the Frenchman
won a corner, the ball was half-
cleared to Leandro Greco, who
stung the palms of Kraft from
distance before Mirko Vucinic
blasted over the rebound with the
goal gaping.
With half-chances available at each
end it became only a question of
who would break the deadlock, and
FC Hollywood did so on 34 minutes.
Franck Ribery cleverly dragged a
cross square to Mario Gomez, who
swept a right-footed shot beyond
the sprawling dive of Julio Sergio
from 10 yards to silence the home
crowd.
They were further quietened just
five minutes later when Bayern
doubled their advantage. When
Roma allowed the ball to run
dangerously across the edge of
their own box, Thomas Mueller
beat De Rossi to the touch and
found Gomez, who fired across Julio
Sergio and into the net.
It was a real sucker-punch for a
Lupi side who had been more than
competitive, but they could easily
have fallen further behind had the
referee pointed to the spot when
Matteo Brighi appeared to get
nothing of the ball when challenging
Ribery just before the break.
