List Of 2013 Top Charity Donors - Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg Leads

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are the first donors under the age of 30 that have made the nation’s largest philanthropic gift after giving 18m shares of Facebook stock to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in America. The gift was valued at more than $990m.

2013 largest donation came from the founder and CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan. They announced last month (December) that they had given 18m shares of Facebook stock to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

The donation is “by far the largest gift in our history,” Emmett Carson, CEO of the Mountain View-based foundation, said at the time. Carson declined to say how the money will be used, but added: “We believe this gift will immensely improve the lives of people here and elsewhere.”


“Giving Pledge” campaign is a campaign pioneer by billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffet; wealthy individuals like Bill Gates vow to give at least half of their assets to philanthropy over the course of their lives. Mark Zuckrberg is a supporter of this program as he has signed on three years ago to the “Giving Pledge” campaign.

Mark Zuckrberg and his wife have publicly announced their interests and support to causes related to education and health.

The year’s top 15 donors gave a total of $3.4 billion, the Chronicle noted, calling 2013 “notable because of a strong rebound in the number of gifts of $100-million or more.” The total amount of gifts of $100 million or more reached $9.6 billion —a jump of more than one-third over the 2012 figure.
Here are the top 10 philanthropic gifts of 2013, according to a report from the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The list includes 15 gifts, including six at the $100 million level that tied for No. 10.

3. Michael Bloomberg: $350 million pledge to Johns Hopkins University

4. Charles B. Johnson: $250 million pledge to Yale University

5. Stephen Ross: $200 million pledge to University of Michigan

6. Muriel Block: $160 million bequest to Yeshiva University

7. John Arrillaga: $151 million pledge to Stanford University

8. Irwin Jacobs: $133 million pledge to Cornell NYC Tech

9. Charles Munger: $110 million pledge to University of Michigan

10. David Koch: $100 million pledge to New York-Presbyterian Hospital

11. Frank McCourt: $100 million pledge to Georgetown University

12. Ronald Perelman: $100 million pledge to Columbia Business School

13. T. Denny Sanford: $100 million pledge to University of California at San Diego

14. Stephen Schwarzman: $100 million pledge to Tsinghua University in Beijing

15. Deborah Joy Simon: $100 million pledge to Mercersburg Academy
